Substitutions for Your Pantry Challenge

by Heather on January 4, 2010

I have lived out of the pantry many times while growing up and then with my own family.  We live on limited funds and I have learned to stock up on sales, can surplus produce and prepare extra when things are in season for the freezer.  What took me awhile to really learn was how to use substitutions when I didn’t have an ingredient.  I thought I would share some of my more common substitutions for those of you who are new to a pantry challenge.

You can view and print my substitution list whenever you need a quick help.  I hope this helps while you are trying to eat out of your pantry during January.

Eat From The Pantry Challenge

by Heather on January 3, 2010

I have been meaning to clean out my pantry and really work hard on the budget for awhile.  With the holidays over it seems like the perfect time to get on track and start over.  My pantry at this point is pretty well stocked.  The biggest issue will be taking an inventory of the pantry and freezers so that I can plan my meals.  After my hubby fixes the door in my laundry room today I will start working on planning this weeks meals from the pantry.  I hope to keep the groceries under $20 a week for the next month.  I think that I have enough stockpiling in the house to make this work. Most likely what I do buy in that $20 or under will be sale items I am not sure I want to pass on.
