Uncle Ben’s Rice

My family recently had the chance to review Uncle Ben’s Whole Grain White Rice.  In our home we typically only eat brown rice and on occassion the kids fuss a bit about not having white rice.  This usually happens after they have had white rice somewhere else other than home.  Uncle Ben’s has provided me with another option whole grain white rice.  The kids loved it and I am happy with it as well.  We also had some extra to share with a family friend and here are their comments.

“E liked the taste.  D didn’t like it; but she doesn’t like any kind of rice.  N thought it tasted delicious and it was soft which felt good on his braces.  I liked the taste also.  I liked the simplicity of cooking it and the nutritional value; especially the low sodium.”

I would love to add this is great for a quick meal as it only takes 10 minutes to cook and it is high in whole grains (45 g)!  For one of those nights when you don’t have a long time span to make slow cooking rice this will now be our option.  Thanks Uncle Ben’s and Mom Central.

Pringles Multigrain

I am a huge snacker.  Depending on my mood (yeah I am an emotional eater too) I tend to be like many of you and want something either sweet or salty.  It is a habit I wish I could kick but none the less it is a reality.  Recently Mom Central and Pringles sent me a sample of Pringles Multigrain.  These are now high on my list for a salty snack.  Not only can you munch them up way too fast but I love the texture of the chips.

My boys were all curious and raided my chip stash (Poor me) and little to say they didn’t last long.  The men of the house agreed that if Pringles are on our shopping list we will definately be switching over to the multigrain varieties.  I really appreciate that Pringles chose to add these chips to their line and I hope to see more flavors in the future.  The ranch, cheddar and original we tried were all great but I think the ranch chips were the first out and finished.  Way to go Pringles and thanks for satisfying our snacking!

Sylvania Halogen Light Bulbs

First off before I write this review I owe an apology to Mom Central and Sylvania for missing a deadline.  With my son in the hospital I totally brushed this review off and I have to say I am sorry.  I do appreciate the opportunity to work with you both.

I received two Sylvania Halogen 60W replacement bulbs which use only 43W of power.  In the past few months we have switched over most of the bulbs in our home to energy efficient bulbs.  We however do have a few bulbs that we haven’t changed over.  One reason is that they are on dimmable switches.  The Sylvania Halogens are fully dimmable and work wonderfully.  They provide brilliant light and are mercury free.  Another bonus is they are made in the USA providing jobs for fellow Americans.  I personally value that more in times of economic hardships like we are currently seeing.

So if you are looking for a great new energy efficient light bulb that is mercury free and fully dimmable unlike the CFL bulbs which most of us purchase to reduce light bulb energy expenses this is the bulb you should look into.

Funky Monkey Snacks

Our family recently received  Funky Monkey Snacks in the flavors of Applemon (apples with cinnamon), the Pink Pineapple (pineapple with guava), and MangOJ, (mango with orange juice).  The fruit snacks are freeze dried and 100% natural.  There are no added sugar and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.  In each bag is 3 full servings of fruit.  My kids thought they were so good that they easily could have snacked up that entire bag making it easy to reach that daily serving recommendation of fruits.  I think our favorite flavor was the Pineapple.  The other flavors available are Funky Monkey Snacks Bananamon Funky Monkey Snacks, Purple Funk (Banana with Acai) Funky Monkey Snacks, JiveALime (Pineapple with Lime) Funky Monkey Snacks and Carnaval Mix Funky Monkey Snacks.

If you are trying to cut down on the sugar your kids consume and promote a healthier eating habit?  This really would be a good replacement for candy.  It is sweet enough to be a great treat without having all of that added sugar.  You can order these snacks at any one of the previous links.

I received samples of Funky Monkey Snacks for review purposes only.  No other compensation was received.

Over the past several weeks I have been reviewing the Upper Level Homeschool Parents Course.  The program guides you through planning the high school years for homeschoolers. There is a lot of information in this series and much of it is highly useful.  The lessons are as listed below

  1. Mapping a 4 Year Course of Study
  2. Designing a Course for High School Credit
  3. Outsourcing Difficult Subjects
  4. Starting and Maintaining a Transcript
  5. Developing Good Study Habits
  6. Preparing for Aptitude Tests – ACT/SAT
  7. Tackling the Timed Essay
  8. Taking Courses for Dual Credit
  9. CLEP Testing for College Credit
  10. Planning and Preparing for College
  11. Applying for Financial Aid
  12. Finacial Literacy for Teens
  13. Launching for Success

I homeschool my oldest son who is in the 8th grade and will be entering high school next  year.  The first couple lessons really applied to us in the fact that they help plan out a map for what you should include for the high school years.  They did give me several ideas to follow through with but in the long run we finally made the decision to enroll my son in an alternative style school next year (more on this later).  I would recommend this course to a parent getting ready to or already in the process of homeschooling a high school aged child.  The information included is highly valuable and the assistance you get in planning is priceless.  At the beginning of a year it is sometimes easy to just plan that year but high school is truely a different situation.  You need to look at the next few years so that your child can move forward in life.  Knowledge Quest has put together a good program to help you with that planning.  You can check out the program at Upper Level Homeschool.
