Surviving Middle School Parenthood

As many of you know I have two boys in middle school and one just starting high school.  The dramatics run high in our home (you would’ve thought we have girls) as with most young teens.  Some days finding balance is a challenge.

Middle school is the time where kids start merging into adulthood and leaving behind the child in the elementary school.  As in all transitions there are growing pains and bumps in the road.  Robert Walrond wants to help you navigate your way through middle school with your child and make the ride a little smoother.

Book Summary:

As friends Libby Conley, Pete Leidig, and Bennett Martin head off to college together, they each harbor a special plan for the future. But as tensions rise around the world on the brink of World War I, the friends’ differing aspirations and opinions begin to divide them, as well.
When Libby makes a shocking discovery about Pete’s family, will it drive a final wedge between the friends or bond them in ways they never anticipated?

My Thoughts:

I like Kim Vogel Sawyer as an author and I enjoyed In Every Heartbeat.  I did however find this book a bit slower at first.  When I got into the story I found it much easier to continue.  I guess it just took a bit to get the history of the characters laid out.

I could find a bit of myself in several of the characters throughout the book and there were several to choose from.  Libby is rather strong headed but at the same time she gives so much to those she loves and while she doesn’t like to show it she is easily hurt by them as well.  Most of the time this is seriously a misunderstanding however perception is what we all base our hurts on.  Yet sometimes I feel like Petey where I have to keep working at something to get to a goal.  And there is even a little of Bennett in me with a rebellious side who wants to be noticed.

No matter who we are we have something to learn and God stretches and grows us like flowers.  Reading a story like In Every Heartbeat sometimes opens our eyes to where we have been and what we have become.  A copy of In Every Heartbeat might be a perfect gift for a special woman in your life.

Book Summary:

Deep in the Colorado Territory, widow Rachel Boyd struggles to keep her ranch afloat. Faced with a loss she can’t afford–and forced to trust the one man she’s always avoided–she is about to learn that sometimes the greatest step of faith is taken neck-deep in fear.

My Thoughts:

This is the first time I picked up a book by Tamera Alexander and it likely won’t be the last.  Tamera’s creation of Rachel was brilliant.  She is a stubborn woman but mainly because she has been hurt by tragedy.  As a woman who tends to put up walls when times get tough just to survive I can fully relate to Rachel.  I love how Within My Heart shows how Rachel grows when she decides to let down her walls, forgive and move onto a life she wants for herself and her family.  We all need a gentle reminder to move on sometimes and Rachel is a great example.

Love of Amish Stories

I thought I would share one of my favorite things with you today. I have a love of stories about the Amish. I enjoy the simple way of life they lead and sometimes envy it. Although their lives are simple they are not without complications. Reading the many stories both fiction and nonfiction most center around some personal trial.

Earlier today I had the opportunity to sit in on a chat with one of my favorite Amish authors Cindy Woodsmall. She has a way of writing about her characters that makes you wish the book would never end and you could continue to follow the story. You can check out Cindy Woodsmall on Amazon Love of Amish Stories and see a listing of all her books that are available.

sleighbells Love of Amish StoriesIf you are starting to think about Christmas I highly recommend picking up a copy of The Sound of Sleigh Bells Love of Amish Stories for a good read for yourself or for a gift. The following is a summary of the book.

Beth Hertzler works alongside her beloved Aunt Lizzy in their dry goods store, and serving as contact of sorts between Amish craftsmen and Englischers who want to sell the Plain people’s wares. But remorse and loneliness still echo in her heart everyday as she still wears the dark garb, indicating mourning of her fiancé. When she discovers a large, intricately carved scene of Amish children playing in the snow, something deep inside Beth’s soul responds and she wants to help the unknown artist find homes for his work–including Lizzy’s dry goods store. But she doesn’t know if her bishop will approve of the gorgeous carving or deem it idolatry.

Lizzy sees the changes in her niece when Beth shows her the woodworking, and after Lizzy hunts down Jonah, the artist, she is all the more determined that Beth meets this man with the hands that create healing art. But it’s not that simple–will Lizzy’s elaborate plan to reintroduce her niece to love work? Will Jonah be able to offer Beth the sleigh ride she’s always dreamed of and a second chance at real love–or just more heartbreak?

One of the nice things about The Sound of Sleigh Bells is it is a short read. So those of you who feel like you don’t have time for a book can squeeze this story in easily.

If you find you enjoy this book make sure to check out other books by Cindy Woodsmall. If you are already familiar with her then don’t miss out on The Bridge of Peace: A Novel (An Ada’s House Novel) Love of Amish Stories which was released August 31, 2010.
