Summary of Amy Inspired:

Amy Gallagher is an aspiring writer who, after countless rejections, has settled for a career as an English professor in small-town Ohio just to pay the bills. All her dreams suddenly start to unravel as rejections pile up—both from publishers and her boyfriend. But just as Amy fears her life is stuck in a holding pattern, she meets the mysterious, attractive, and unavailable Eli.

She struggles to walk the fine line between friendship and something more with Eli, even as staying true to her faith becomes unexpectedly complicated. When secrets, tragedy, and poor decisions cause rifts in Amy’s relationships, she must come to terms with who she’s become, her unrealized aspirations for her life, and the state of her faith. Can she dare to hope that she will find love and fulfillment despite it all?

Author Bio of Bethany Pierce:

Bethany Pierce was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio to a Christian minister and an elementary school art teacher who encouraged the reading of books by storing the television on a microwave stand in the hall closet. In 2006, she graduated from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio with a B.F.A. in painting and an M.A. in creative writing. Her first novel, Feeling for Bones, was named one of the best books of 2007 by Publishers Weekly. Presently, she lives in Charlottesville, Virginia where she writes and paints as a member of the McGuffey Art Center.

My Thoughts on Amy Inspired:

This was my first encounter with a book by Bethany Pierce.  She writes differently than something I am used to writing.  Is that bad, no not really just different.

I have to say that I had a difficult time relating to Amy who was a writer trying to find her inspiration.  While I often suffer from writers block I am so far from Amy as a character that I more found her intriguing instead of relating to her.  Amy is single living with her roommate Zoe.  Zoe is quite eccentric and unpredictable.  Eli enters the picture after Amy has ended a relationship and he really kind of gets on her nerves.  The story unfolds and life happens for both Amy and Zoe while a love interest happens between Amy and Eli.

While I wouldn’t hesitate to pass this book onto a friend I cannot say that it hits my all time favorite list.  I will say however that I did appreciate the ending and I would pick up another book by Bethany Pierce just to see if her subject is something I could relate to better.

Thrift Store Thursday: Used Books

books 300x225 Thrift Store Thursday: Used BooksOne of my guilty pleasures is reading.  I love to both read to relax and to expand my knowledge base.  Books, however, are rather expensive when purchased at retail prices.

One of the best places to find books is at thrift stores.  People discard books daily.  Many don’t want the extra clutter after they have read a recent best seller.  Others are updating their reference libraries.  Or maybe the kids have just outgrown their current library and advanced to the next reading level.

While out of town this past weekend I picked up a few of these books.

I have a son that is very into drawing and what better thing for a boy fast approaching a driver’s license than a book on drawing cars.

Reference books may be slightly out of date but much of the information is still usable.  For example the Householders Survival Manual shown above has electronics information including items like VCRs but nothing on a DVD player.  However there is a wealth of information about cleaning, repairing tiles, gutters and appliances.

Devotionals can be great finds as well.  The one I have pictured above even came with a CD version for daily computer reading.  I actually purchased this one prior to Christmas and gave it to my husband since it was in mint condition.  Who knows it could have been a gift someone else didn’t want.

So take a look at a thrift store when looking for some reading material.  Books are a cheap way to entertain or educate yourself.

Love’s First Bloom by Delia Parr

Loves first bloom Loves First Bloom by Delia ParrLove’s First Bloom Loves First Bloom by Delia Parr

Book Summary:

Life changes drastically for Ruth Livingstone the day her father puts a young child in her arms and sends her under an assumed name to a small village in New Jersey. There she dutifully awaits his acquittal, certain that her father, Reverend Livingstone, soon will be cleared of the outrageous accusations against him.

When tragic events transpire, Ruth finds solace tending a garden along the banks of the Toms River—a place where she can find a measure of peace amid her growing heartache. It is also here that she meets Jake Spencer, a man who both frustrates and intrigues her. Fearful of the newspapermen intent on tracking her down and unsure of whom to trust, Ruth knows she must carefully maintain her identity as Widow Malloy. But as love begins to slowly bloom, can the tenuous affection growing between Ruth and Jake withstand the secrets that separate them?

My Thoughts:

Ruth is a very innocent bystander in her father’s lifestyle.  She has been sheltered and doesn’t question anything when her father asks her to take an orphaned infant into hiding.  Ruth doesn’t have a full understanding of what real life is like but she is about to learn.

I can’t really label Love’s First Bloom as a coming of age story but more of an awakening into historical society.  Ruth learns that things are not as simple in the real world as they were sheltered by her father.  Through the pain of her situation she grows and struggles with the reality that as long as she is living in hiding everyone around her is a possible threat to her security.  Whom will she trust and how will she live out her father’s legacy?

Love’s First Bloom is well written and bound to keep you entertained.

Gifts Cooks Love and MPM

gifts cooks love Gifts Cooks Love and MPMAs a cook and food lover one of the best gifts I can give or receive is that pertaining to food.  Gifts Cooks Love Gifts Cooks Love and MPM by Diane Morgan is going to be a great gift on it’s own but may be just the item you are looking for to help you give some frugal gifts from the kitchen.  While many recipe books offer gift ideas not all are going to give you the details and wondrous pictures that Gifts Cooks Love provides.  Between the covers you will find gifts that are canned, dried, baked and smoked.  Some of the ideas are common while others are extraordinary and bound to show someone you really care a lot.  To top it off Diane gives you plenty of packaging ideas as presentation is half of the gift.  One of my favorites is the Mexican Drinking Chocolate.  Seriously a warm drink and a book are great on a winter evening.

Mexican Drinking Chocolate

Irresistible, especially on a cold winter’s day, this hot chocolate drink is deeply rich, vanilla-perfumed, and chilecharged— an ideal gift for friends who ski, snowboard, or ice skate. You make the decadent base, pour it into jars, and refrigerate until it sets like a firm ganache. Tie the decorative jars with ribbon and attach a recipe card. Spooned from the jar into a warm mug, the chocolate is stirred with hot or steamed milk for an indulgent, après-ski treat by the fire—a cozy, delicious gift.

Ingredients for Mexican Drinking Chocolate

1¼ pounds (20 ounces) bittersweet chocolate (61 to 66 percent cacao), finely chopped

2¼ cups heavy (whipping) cream

2 soft, plump whole vanilla beans, split and scraped

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon ground chipotle chile powder

¼ cup light corn syrup

½ teaspoon almond extract

Implements

Four (½-Pint) Decorative Glass Jars with Tight-Fitting Lids, Kitchen Scale, Cutting Board, Chef’s Knife, Large Heatproof Glass or Stainless-Steel Bowl, Measuring Cups and Spoons, Paring Knife, Medium Saucepan, Silicone Spatula

Instructions for making Mexican Drinking Chocolate

  1.  Wash the jars, including the lids, in hot, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Alternatively, run the jars through the regular cycle of your dishwasher; wash the lids by hand.
  2. Place the chocolate in a large heatproof bowl. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan over low heat, bring the cream, vanilla beans (seeds and pods), cinnamon, and chipotle chile to a boil, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat. Using a silicone spatula, press the vanilla pods against the side of the pan to remove any remaining seeds and cream. Discard the pods.
  4. Immediately pour the cream mixture over the chocolate, stirring constantly until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Add the corn syrup and almond extract, stirring until incorporated.
  5. Pour the chocolate ganache into the prepared jars, dividing it evenly and leaving ½ inch headspace. Wipe the rims clean and secure the lids. Label and refrigerate.

Vigilante’s Bride by Yvonne Harris

Vigilante’s Bride Vigilantes Bride by Yvonne Harris

Book Summary:
Luke Sullivan just wants to reclaim the money stolen from his father. One stagecoach heist later, his pockets are full and he’s one feisty mail-order bride richer. Only problem is, she was on the way to marry his bitter enemy–and she doesn’t take kindly to her “rescue.”
Yet crossing this dangerous man is only the beginning of Luke’s problems. As he realizes what a true treasure the beautiful–but headstrong–redhead in his care is, how far will he go to prevent her prearranged marriage?

My Thoughts:

I have found another book that I loved the plot of.  Something about stories with orphans in them just grabs my heart.  When Luke “rescues” the mysterious woman on the stagecoach he has little knowledge of what he is getting into.  Finding himself in a new light will come from protecting her and the story evolves as the pair grows together.  Pick up this book for a good read on a cold evening.
